Cane Garden Bay (Tortola)

Cane Garden Bay is a shallow, tranquil bay on the west side of Tortola. It’s home to a large selection of accommodations, activities, and opportunities to experience the beauty of the British Virgin Islands. 

Start the day off with a walk down one of the longer stretches of white sand on Tortola. You can jump in the water for some watersports or snorkeling and wrap the day up dancing the night away at one of the local bars or clubs nearby.

How To Get to Cane Garden Bay in Tortola, BVI

Getting to it is as simple as grabbing a taxi, depending on which side of the island you’re staying in. You should easily be able to hail a ride from Road Town in the middle of the island or from Parham Town to the east.  

If you feel like adventuring on your own terms, rent a car from one of the vendors at Terrence B. Lettsome Airport to the east, on Beef Island. Rental companies like Alamo, Dollar, and Enterprise have a sales counter here, so you can get a modern car at a decent price.

If you’re sailing in or have a chartered boat, you’ll be approaching Tortola from the west and can rest your boat on the marina.

Cane Garden Bay Beach is one of the more popular spots on Tortola, BVI and a great place to check out if you’re just stopping by from a cruise ship.

That popularity affords visitors a wide choice of modern restroom facilities and parking all along Route 1. The parking is conveniently located just off the beach.

When you get hungry or thirsty, there are around a dozen different places to fill your appetite and thirst in whatever way you see fit. Most of these locations offer a stunning view of Cane Garden Bay from the surrounding hills and some are directly adjacent to the beach.

Noteworthy restaurants include Glen Seaside Bar and Restaurant and Myett’s Restaurant and Hotel. 

Activities & Things To Do

There are loads of watersports activities you can do in Cane Garden Bay, and you can rent all of the equipment you’ll need right on the beach. 

Snorkeling here gives you a chance to see local coral and colorful fish native to the British Virgin Islands. Some of the best viewings will be on the west side of the bay, to your left when you approach the water. Here you’ll find a reef teeming with life just off the shore.

However, if you’re specifically looking to go snorkeling, there are other beaches in Tortola that offer more in terms of marine life.

There are accommodations around the entire perimeter of Cane Garden Bay Beach, ranging from smaller cottages and villas for an intimate setting to luxury inns and suites with a more traditional island flair.

If you’re a fan of rum, check out the Callwood Rum Distillery and take a tour and tasting. Live it up like a pirate where the rum flows non-stop.

Pick up a ride to nearby Shark Bay National Park or Mount Healthy National Park and enjoy a beautiful hike in some of the untouched natural beauty this side of Tortola has to offer.

You can find Apple Bay farther South and Brewers Bay if you travel a bit farther north on Route 1.
